Outdoor Sex is In—and a Lot of People Are Doing It at the Park

As a kid, my parents believed that our town’s local roller rink was only bad news and primarily populated by our suburb’s most deplorable characters. I was never allowed to go as a result. Yet, on one special occasion, for my neighbor’s 12th birthday, I was given permission. The kid was basically my brother; there’s no way I wasn’t going to be allowed to go to his supervised party, even if it was at the seediest place in town.

Excited yet nervous at the same time, I partied the only way an 11-year-old could: by drinking fountains of fizzy pop and stuffing my face with the greasiest pizza known to man. As a result, I had to go to the bathroom.

I bladed myself over to the public restroom and there it was right in front of me: a teen from the rink’s concession stand and the guy who probably cooked the pizza now sitting in my gut having aggressive sex up against the sink. This was the first time I had ever been confronted by live sex, and it was in one of the least romantic places one could imagine. Ever since then, I’ve always have had a very strict apprehension to having sex in a public washroom, aside from the fact that it’s just gross.

But according to a survey of  1,000 Europeans , nearly one in 10 people have had sex in a public bathroom—a place that numerous people have voided their bowels in that very day. More popular than a public bathroom, however, was sex at a park (17 percent) and at the beach (13 percent).

Also surprising, nine percent of respondents had sex in a public garage and seven percent have had sex at work. Feeling vanilla yet? Me too, but it only gets weirder. Five percent have hooked up in a dressing room, three percent in an alleyway and three percent have done the deed in a “public” hot tub.

When it came to which public places people wanted to have sex most, the result was split between genders and deduced quite the insight: the top three places on our sexual bucket-lists are identical. First, we all opted for sand between our buttcheeks on the beach, second was at a park and third was in a dressing room.

What wasn’t identical, however, was how much the act of public sex turned each gender on. Men obviously found public sex more of a sultry prospect than women, outvoting them 56 to 44 percent.

These results prove that while almost half of British find the prospect of public sex arousing, few of us will go beyond safe public spaces where the chances of potentially getting caught are rare. Which does makes sense, but also reveals we really aren’t all that daring. Sure, getting caught having sex in public would be embarrassing, but then again, isn’t that also it’s greatest thrill?
